Online Worship Service for August 9, 2020

“Just Trust” Message by Rev. Dr. Gareth Icenogle

Online Worship Service for August 9, 2020 at Laguna Presbyterian Church, Laguna Beach, Ca. Welcome, we are so glad you are joining us.

The message is given by Rev. Dr. Gareth Icenogle. This morning we continue our sermon series in Paul’s Letter to the Romans, chapter 10 (excerpts).

This morning our Chancel Ensemble lead us in worship along with Beth Pinney and Isaac Manriquez, Sookyung Bang, and Thor Fay. Liturgy is lead by Rev. Dr. Steve Sweet, Rev. Dr. Kathy Sizer, and Virginia Grogan. Videography by Nathan Sweet and sound by Thor Fay.

May the Lord bless you during this time of Covid-19.

About the sermon: In his younger years, the Apostle Paul was an expert at getting righteousness and justice wrong. As we read in Romans 10 (and all of Romans), he and others thought we could become righteous or just by our own initiative or by following rules or by keeping God’s law. He discovered in meeting Jesus face-to-face on the road to Damascus that this path to righteousness and justice was wrong and ultimately destructive. He discovered a more complete and fulfilling way to righteousness and justice: the way of trust – trusting God – having an interpersonal relationship with God who speaks to us, loves us, constantly directs us and gives us Jesus to open the way to model that trust.

Trusting God in Christ keeps us tuned to God’s constant love and leading – much better than following rules. Love is better than law. Trust of God is better than self-determination. Several times in both the Old Testament and New Testament God’s leaders say it the same way: “The just (righteous) will live by trust (faith)”. We are invited into a personal trust relationship with God as individuals and as communities. God speaks, we listen, we do, we argue, we struggle, we doubt, and we learn to take the risk and trust

May the peace of the risen Lord be with you.

Radiant Spring by Anna Hills

This video tells a visual history of the men and women who laid the foundation for Laguna Presbyterian Church. The story is told through the use of historic photos gathered from the 1890’s through the 1970’s. Added to that collection are many contemporary photos taken over the years of the mission and ministries of Laguna Presbyterian Church, along with the addition of photos from this year, 2017, as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of LPC at various gatherings and through various outreach ministries. We are indebted to Jim Hind, our LPC Historian, and to Rick Lang and John Cullings, our photographers in by profession and in ministry. The music credits may be found at the end of the video. Enjoy!

Come, join us in worship on Sundays at 8:30am and 10:30am! We are located in the heart of downtown Laguna Beach and we seek to extend God’s welcome and hospitality to all!
